Shira Route

Approaching from the west, the Shira route is the most scenic route to Kilimanjaro. Shira Route is considered one the oldest route to Kilimanjaro. This route stands relatively high above sea level, at 3600 meters. The Shira route is not ideal for trekkers with zero knowledge of high-altitude trekking.

Typically, it takes 6-8 days to complete the Kilimanjaro Shira Route. This route starts at Shira Gate, located on the west side of Kilimanjaro Mountain. Then this route follows towards the Lava Tower, before converging with the Lemosho Route.

One of the main reasons why climbers choose the Shira route, it’s because, of the stunning view of the surrounding landscapes, including the rainforests and savannah.  Even there is a high chance of spotting wildlife such as elephants, buffalos and monkeys on this route. Despite being a scenic route, we would suggest that novice climbers skip the Shira route. Due to its gradual ascent climbing on this route requires a high level of fitness.

Climbers keen to climb on Shira Route must obtain a climbing permit from the Kilimanjaro National Park authority. Depending on the number of climbers and the duration of your climb, the cost of your permit fees can vary.

The perfect time of the year to climb through the Shira route is from June to October (dry season). Around this time, Mount Kilimanjaro experienced stable weather with clear skies. And, the day temperature remains moderate.

The total length of the Shira Route is 56 km.

Duration

It takes 6-7 days to complete the Shira Route. Most of the past climbers have managed to climb the Shira route within 7 days. And, we suggest you choose the 7-day itinerary over 6 days, where you will get one more extra day to acclimatise.

Success Rate

 Shira Route does not offer a good acclimatisation option and more ever it starts at a high altitude. Despite offering such low-profile acclimatisation, the average success rate of this route is around 85% (for seven – a day route).

Difficulty Level

The difficulty level of the Shira Route is high as this route offers poor acclimatisation at the very beginning. Altitude sickness is the major issue that many hikers face on this route.

1 Is Shira Route too busy?

Generally, the Shira Route is less busy compared to other routes like Lemosho or Machame. On your first couple of days, the crowd on this route is lower, but the Shira route merge with the Lemosho Route, you can expect more numbers hikers.

2 What is the accommodation option on Shira Route like?

Shira Routes offers accommodation. There are several campsites along the way, including Shira Camp 1, Shira Camp 2 and Mori Hut. The campsites on Shira Route are basic but it has all the basic facilities including the toilet.

3 What is the climbing cost of the Shira Route?

The climbing cost of the Shira Route is around $2500. This cost is based on double occupancy and it includes your seven days stay on the Kilimanjaro Mountain.
