Rwanda Travel FAQs

Before travelling to Rwanda, you should know that it is a small, landlocked country located in East Africa. The official language is Kinyarwanda, but English and French are also widely spoken. The currency used is the Rwandan franc (RWF), and you should be prepared to exchange your currency upon arrival. Rwanda is known for its mountain gorillas, beautiful scenery, and friendly people.

The modes of transportation in Rwanda include buses, taxis, and motorcycles, locally known as moto-taxis. Additionally, private car rentals are available, but it is recommended to have a local driver navigate the roads.

Rwanda has a temperate tropical highland climate, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 27°C. The country has two rainy seasons, from February to May and from October to November.

Rwandan cuisine typically consists of a variety of vegetables, beans, and meat dishes, with ugali (a type of cornmeal porridge) being a staple. Popular dishes include grilled meat kebabs, known as brochettes, and bean stew, known as matoke.

It is recommended to be up-to-date on routine vaccinations such as measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), and tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis. Additionally, the yellow fever vaccination is required for travellers arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Consult with a healthcare provider for personalized recommendations.

Travelling around Rwanda is relatively easy, with well-maintained roads and a variety of transportation options. It is possible to rent a car, take a taxi, or use public transportation. However, driving can be challenging due to the narrow roads and steep hills.

Rwanda has a range of accommodation options, including luxury hotels, guesthouses, lodges, and campsites. Prices vary, but generally, accommodation is affordable, and the quality is good.

Rwanda uses Type C and Type J power outlets, which have a voltage of 230-240V at 50 Hz. It requires a 2-pin (round) socket. If you are travelling from a country that uses a different voltage, you will need a converter/adapter for your electronic devices.

Rwanda Tours can be suitable for kids, but it is recommended to choose activities and accommodations that are age-appropriate. Activities such as gorilla trekking and cultural tours may not be suitable for young children.

Most visitors to Rwanda require a passport and a visa, which can be obtained online or upon arrival at the airport. However, visa requirements vary based on nationality, so it is recommended to check with the Rwandan embassy or consulate in your country for specific requirements.
